Meet The Team
Dr. Marilyn Chamberlin
Accomplished Grant Writer and Research Consultant
As a former academic, I excel in writing and research. My most recent success is a federal grant for $4 million over two years. I have successfully written state, city, and federal grants ranging from $100,000 to $200,000. For two years, I worked for a nonprofit; I wrote 37 grants and state contract applications with 75% funded. I developed several programs, including a homeless program, back to school program (school supplies given to children in need), a coat drive, a program for kinship care support, and a coat drive. Recently I finished two contracts with HUD’s Tribal Office for reviewing grant applications for a new tribal housing project. I am also currently a reviewer for AmeriCorps. The reviewer experiences have given me a more rounded perspective on the grant application process.
In addition to the grant writing experience, I also have grant management experience, which includes writing grant reports and following up with grantors. I was the president of a nonprofit county youth swim team and the co-founder of a nonprofit that helps families in need at Christmas. I also serve on two nonprofit boards, one for a new homeless program and a new domestic violence agency. My role on these boards is to provide organization and topical advice. I have conducted research, needs assessments, and writing grants for organizations such as Nurse-Family Partnership, early childhood education, mental health facilities, homelessness, a region-wide alliance on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, a County Department of Social Services, and a task force on domestic violence. My areas of expertise in sociology are gender, domestic violence, child maltreatment, family interactions, sexuality, and how people see themselves and others. My courses included but were not limited to these topics and criminology, sociology of childhood, social organizations and institutions, and law.
Experienced Writer and Editor
With a passion for helping others, grant writing became a way for me to combine my background in creative writing with making a difference in the world. My educational background is in East Asian Studies, Japanese Language and Literature, and Creative Writing. Thus, my writing style is more creative in nature, blending rhetorical practices with story-building. Due to this background, I have a particular passion for cultural organizations, education-based programs that emphasize literacy, and linguistic inclusivity.
I am an accomplished grant writer who specializes in foundation, county, and city grants. These smaller and more personable opportunities are where I shine, helping your organization connect with the foundation by bringing your story to life and emphasizing shared goals and missions. I also have extensive experience in copy and content editing, which lends to strengthening existing drafts and proposal flow to ensure clarity. Independently, I have won many grants in the $25,000 - $75,000 range. Together with Totally Written, we have won grants ranging from $100,000+. My experience with organizations ranges from working with animal shelters to social service programs.
In addition to grant writing, I have participated in program design for a re-entry program, which required research into evidence-based and emerging practices, and have an interest in fundraising strategies and planning. I have also worked as a part-time contracted grant reviewer, which provided insight into the process of grant writing from a more rounded perspective. As I and Totally Written continue to grow, I hope to continue expanding and honing my skillset to support non-profits across the country
